With diverging whimsical styles, the artwork of Rosemary Otto and Ray Larsen are on display and for sale at Lake Worth Beach’s Hatch 1121 creative space April 14 – 29.

The original settlers of Lake Worth Beach, who originally named the city Jewell, have provided the inspiration for the show which reflects the creativity, diversity and fun-loving nature our close-knit beach community. Both Rosemary Otto (born in 1938) and Ray Larsen (1927 – 2022) embody the unique and care-free spirit of the residents of Lake Worth Beach.

Born in Chicago and growing up in Denmark, Ray Larsen was an architect who apprenticed under the highly regarded Danish typographer and artist Willy Nielsen. Together, these influences were a driving force in formulating his meticulous style. Larsen experimented with many different artistic mediums over the years but settled on painting - primarily with acrylics - while sculpting imaginative pieces out of wood. His works span a lengthy career of more than 70 years and can be described as lightly satirical and fanciful, peppered with occasional tongue-in-cheek social commentary.

Born in Germany, Rosemary Otto still lives and paints in her great-grandmother’s house where she was raised as a child. Her mother was an art teacher in Lake Worth Beach, and she helped Rosemary learn how to communicate through painting. Her extensive body of work includes etchings, oils paintings, collages and watercolors. Her works tell vibrant stories though scenes of fantastical animals and people with characters that portray Otto’s own spiritual beliefs and reflections on her life. Her long-standing routine still allows her to paint and draw every day. Her most recent series is of stylized flowers in colorful vases.

The works of both artists complement each other with their generous use of brilliant colors and playful subject matter.
The public is invited to attend the show and sale at Hatch1121 located at
1121 Lucerne Avenue, Lake Worth Beach.
